Halloween

Elyse turned 11 this Halloween.  We surprised her by kidnapping her at lunch and taking her to her favorite burger place.  Ha,ha--she thought that was the real surprise for the day.  It was actually the fake surprise to throw off the big one.  She begged over the summer to get her ears pierced when she turned eleven, especially when she heard that i got mine pierced at eleven.  I repeatedly gave an adamant no, she had to wait until she turned 12.  Then I got to thinking, she's my only girl so I don't have to worry about setting a precedent.  She's worked really hard this year at home and is such a responsible kid, I thought she could handle it.  So after school, I blindfolded her and took her to Claire's.  Boy, was she surprised.  And then she started shaking--like in every limb, she was so nervous.  But she went through it and loves them.
Luke's class sang us Halloween songs at the end of the school day.

 Carving pumpkins after school.
We went trick or treating with our Jon Deibel cousins in their neighborhood
Jarom:  our reluctant trick or treater.  He'd had no nap that day and was coming down with some nasty pink eye.  Later that night, he was up screaming in the wee hours with an ear infection.  Poor kid.
Birthday cake on Halloween = sugar overload for everybody
Our pumpkins.  Even though we left our neighborhood we left our pumpkins glowing for the trick or treaters and a bowl of succors on the porch.  The bowl was empty when we got home.  Hopefully the kids spread the wealth and one of them didn't steal them all.  Oh, only one of those pumpkins came from our garden.  I think this is the last time I try to grow them.  We always get a huge patch of leaves and blossoms, but not a great crop.  Yes, ours is the small one next to Paul.

Halloween Dinner with Cousins

Uncle Jon and Aunt Elizabeth hosted a halloween feast at their house on Sunday.  When we arrived, they had us each fill out a menu card that had choices like ruminated zombie toes, puss filled sacks, witches toenails with fungus, goat's heart stew, and pile o'worms.  The kids had fun seeing what each course really was as they came out:  apple slices, hot dogs wrapped in dough, etc.  The pile o'worms really was a pile of worms--jello worms, that is.

Art Bag

Since my sewing machine has been left out every day while working on Christmas quilts, I was afraid Elyse was getting suspicious about what I was doing.  So I made art bags for Luke and Paul to throw her off.  I found this adorable boy fabric with steam ships, cranes, and construction trucks for Luke.  This is another pattern from the sewing book i bought this summer.  I love this book because everything in it is easy.  These bags only took a couple hours.

As far as quilts go I have Luke and Paul's done.  I'm piecing Elyse's together.  I think I'll easily make it before Christmas.
