Baby Chicks

Paul's second grade class hatched some chicken eggs for a science project.  I think they started out with about two dozen, checked those to see which were fertilirzed and ended up with about a dozen. From that dozen, only three hatched:  chocolate chick, penny, and chickmunk (which looks like a chipmunk with stripes, believe it or not).  Paul really wanted me to come see the chicks, so I headed over after school on Monday.  Paul ran out of the building with a frown to tell me that chocolate chick had died over the weekend.  So out of twenty four eggs, there were two little chicks running around in the box for Paul and Luke to hold.  I'm amazed at how much he learned about how the chickens develop in the eggs and how they get out.  They even opened some of the duds during class to study--ew, gross.  Paul said one had a bunch of black feathers and goo in it.  Luke loved holding the chicks and Jarom got to view them safely from his stroller (safe for the chicks, not for him necessarily).

The Good, the Bad, and THE UGLY!!! Mostly the ugly.

Tonight was great birth control--one of those evenings that completely confirms my decision to not have any more children.  My friend teaches piano to about twenty students and she invited my two kids to join her recital tonight since I teach them and they don't get a chance to play in front of a large audience.  Unfortunately, Matt had to work and I ignored that little voice in my head that said I should get a babysitter for the two youngest.  Jarom was Mr. chat his head off tonight.  I took him out to the foyer before the first song and then he just got louder and louder until I had to take him outside the building and sit him down on a step.  Meanwhile, I kept trying to dart back inside to listen to my own two chidlren, Jarom in tow, who was loud all through their two pieces.  Paul started his song in the wrong key.  Elyse drew a complete blank and didn't even finish her piece and sat down.  Meanwhile, Luke is going back and forth from his bench, to the foyer, to the bench, to the foyer,  in one shoe no less.  I don't even know how Elyse and Paul behaved because I didn't even see them the rest of the hour.  To top it off, I swear the air conditioning wasn't working.  I had sweat running down my back, my arms, my legs, and it's the embarrassing kind because everyone looks cool and comfortable and I just felt like a frumpy, sweaty housewife with loud kids.  With a half hour to go, I migraine came on.  I let everyone have dessert, except Jarom, who is still screaming for a cookie, but I think he's just going directly to bed.  Now.
